Arc de Triomphe
At the western end of the Champs Élysées is the world-famous Arc de Triomphe. The Arc was comissioned in 1806 by Napoleon Bonaparte after his victory in Austerlitz and was finally completed (after a long pause during the Restoration) during the reign of King Louis-Philipe in 1836.
The monument stands over 51 meters (165 ft) in height and is 45 meters wide. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence.
Fun Facts
- An unknown soldier from World War I is buried under the Arc.
- The Arc holds Western Europe's first eternal flame.
